The Minister for Public Works Department and Transport, Yunus Khan addressing a two-day 'Triage Protocol' attended by 120 doctors and nursing personnel at Sawai Man Singh Hospital, called road safety a continuous process.

The Minister spoke of the two-way efforts being made by the government to create public awareness both in cities and villages on road safety so that accidents don't occur, and the injured can be saved through bringing about improvement in trauma care.

The Minister announced that 10 beds and necessary equipment would be provided to Sawai Man Singh Hospital's trauma centre; and that there was to be a flow of funds in the state, to strengthen its trauma care infrastructure.

Mr Khan was addressing the doctors and nurses at the Jaipur Medical Association auditorium at the SMS hospital. At the workshop, the minister revealed that the 10 additional beds were being given at the request of SMS Medical College, Principal Dr US Agarwal and Hospital Superintendent, Dr DS Meena.

He called for the tender process to be completed within 60 days; prioritizing government's intention to ensure that the injured got proper treatment.

Dr Meena informed the gathering that the death rate of the injured before implementation of the triage protocol was 68%, however, after the triage protocol she said it had been reduced to a mere 28%.

Presently the bed strength at SMS Hospital amounts to 7 and is shared with both neuro care and ICU.

The earlier fund approval of Rs.3.23 crore by the transport department had resulted in the ICU getting 10 beds. The last ministerial announcement has increased this strength to 20 ICU beds, reports HT.

A trauma centre is a hospital equipped and staffed to provide care for patients suffering from major traumatic injuries such as falls, motor vehicle collisions, or gunshot wounds.

The highest levels of trauma centres have access to specialist medical and nursing care including emergency medicine, trauma surgery, critical care, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, anesthesiology and radiology, as well as highly sophisticated surgical and diagnostic equipment.Lower levels of trauma centres may only be able to provide initial care and stabilization of a traumatic injury and arrange for the transfer of the victim to a higher level of trauma care.
