RajaRajeswari Medical College moves from Karnataka University To Tamil Nadu

Bengaluru: Karnataka may have got the maximum number of PG Diploma Seats converted by the Medical Council of India (MCI), but the state's medical education sector has taken a major hit.

As mentioned in a recent report by the Mirror, one of the top medical colleges in Karnataka, RajaRajeswari Medical College and Hospital will now become a part of Tamil Nadu based Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute (Deemed to be University) which will lead to a fall of 250 seats in the Karnataka's MBBS pool along with more than 100 PG medical seats.

The confirmation comes after the University Grants Commission (UGC) issued a notification stating, "RajaRajeswari Medical College and Hospital which is located in the city will become a constituent college of Dr MGR institute from the academic year 2019-20."

The UGC also asked the Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) to take necessary action towards disaffiliation of Rajarajeswari Medical College from its ambit.

Last year Dr MGR University had submitted an application for the inclusion of the medical college under the ambit of Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute (Deemed to be University). According to the daily, the UGC notification mentions that after it obtained the application from the Tamil Nadu varsity, the UGC's Expert Committee consisting of a nominee of MCI scrutinized the application and placed before the Commission. The Commission considered and approved the recommendations of the Committee.

Boost for the medical college

Glad with the development, Dr Naveen S, Principal of Rajarajeswari Medical College stated to Mirror, "It is a big boost for us… When we become a part of a deemed university, our research work will improve, funding will be more and it will result in the overall growth for our institution. As of now, we get our funding from RGUHS, but that is very less."

There will be new courses introduced once the college becomes a part of a deemed university, he added.

The medical students, who enrolled in RajaRajeswari Medical College prior to its inclusion under the ambit Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute will receive their degrees from RGUHS and those medical students who enrolled at the medical college after its disaffiliation from RGUHS will be awarded degrees by MGR University.

Speaking to Mirror Dr Sachidanand, V-C of RGUHS said, "They applied for it long ago with a view to becoming a university and it has been a long process. I guess even before I took over the charge, it was going on. Now once the orders are issued they will officially be part of another university."
