Ragging Case against six 2nd year MBBS students of Mumbai medical college for forcing assignments on Juniors
Mumbai: A ragging complaint has been filed against six second-year MBBS students of HBT Medical College and Dr R N Cooper Municipal General Hospital by 40 fresher medicos who alleged the seniors of forcing them to complete their assignments
The complaint was filed by the first-year students with the anti-ragging committee of Cooper hospital on 21 December 2019.
As per the complaint, seniors entered their hostel one-day prior in the absence of security guard or warden and pressurized them to complete their practical journals as soon as possible. Seniors allegedly told them that they have to submit their journals before 23 December, so work should be done in the next few hours. When all the juniors, except four, did not follow their orders, they harassed them and started throwing casteist slurs on them.
Describing the incident, the medicos further added that they were not permitted to leave the hostel for another two hours after which they finally called senior doctors at BMC and ran to the Cooper hospital for help.
They filed the complaint with the dean of the medical college who further passed the matter to the anti-ragging committee

"It is shocking that senior students were asking the help of the junior students. Is this how they plan to become doctors? First-year students hardly have any related knowledge. It is a serious matter and we will take serious action against the six if they prove guilty," Dr Gujjar, Dean, RNT Medical college said speaking to Mumbai mirror, emphasizing that the no ragging will be tolerated at the medical college
Following the complaint, the 2nd year medicos have been expelled from the student hostel for a period of three months reports TOI. Further investigation in being conducted by the anti-ragging committee
As per Medical Council of India (MCI), ragging is defined as "Any conduct whether by words spoken or written or by an act which has the effect of harassing, teasing, treating or handling with rudeness any other student, indulging in rowdy or undisciplined activities which causes or is likely to cause annoyance, hardship or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in a fresher or a junior student or asking the students to do any act or perform something which such student will not in the ordinary course and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the physique or psyche of a fresher or a junior student."
