Ragging at MGM Medical College: Human Rights Commission receives complaint

Indore: A ragging case has surfaced at the well known Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College (MGM Medical College) Indore through a complaint received by the Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (HRC).


According to a recent report by The Free Press Journal, the police informed the medical college authorities about the ragging incident that allegedly had taken place in the medical college campus. The police officials came to know about the incident via a forwarded email by the Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (HRC).


Earlier, the commission had received a complaint of ragging by an anonymous person. Accordingly, the HRC forwarded the complaint to the police which further informed the medical college administration about the ragging.


Confirming the information, the Dean of MGM Medical College, Dr Jyoti Bindal informed the Free Press Journal, "We received a mail from Human Rights Commission about ragging in the college. The complaint was lodged by an anonymous person with HRC in which he/she only mentioned that ragging is taking place in MGM Medical College."


Dr Bindal further informed that she has directed all departments and anti-ragging and students' welfare committee to probe the matter and get the details on it. The medical college didn't have any information about the complainant.


The police team is waiting for information from the medical college so as to investigate the matter.


The Sanyogitaganj CSP, Jyoti Umath told the Free Press Journal, "We have informed college about it. We are waiting for college report and will act accordingly."


The cases of ragging in the MGM Medical College were reported earlier as well.


The Medical Dialogues team had reported a serious incident of ragging in 2017 in the hostel of MGM Medical College. 29 senior hostellers of the 2015 batch were suspended for ragging juniors on the hostel premises.

Earlier in 2016, a junior student had filed a complaint with anti-ragging helpline of UGC; pointing fingers at his seniors in the medical college. The medical student claimed that even other PG fresher students of obstetrics & gynaecology department are victims of alleged mental harassment by the seniors. The victim had pointed out that the harassed students were being forced into abetment to commit suicide.
