Even though various measures have been drafted and put into action by the college’s concerned departments, no strict course against the oppressive students has taken place.

Nainital: In yet another ragging case reported at Dr Susheela Tiwari Government Medical College and Hospital, three fourth-year MBBS students have been accused of allegedly ragging four third-year students and brutally thrashing them.

The college was earlier also in the news for the same reason after a 1 year medico had filed a complaint with the UGC claiming that he was allegedly ragged by his seniors, who also thrashed him up and tore his clothes.

This time, action has been taken by the authorities. The accused fourth-year MBBS students in the latest ragging incident have been expelled from the medical college hostel on the basis of the complaint filed by the victimized medicos.

Confirming the expulsion, Dr CP Bhaisora, Principal of the Medical College told TOI, “Three students have been asked to move out of the hostel and notices have been served to them to explain their acts. An inquiry has been launched into the matter. We will not tolerate such anti-social behaviour inside or outside the campus.”

In their complaint, the third-year MBBS students claimed that they were “mercilessly beaten up” by their seniors. The incident reportedly occurred on 25th October and the scuffle between the two groups was triggered following a heated argument.

Even though various measures have been drafted and put into action by the college’s concerned departments, no strict course against the oppressive students has taken place.

Speaking to TOI, many of the distressed MBBS medicos have shared their side on the uncontrolled ragging menace at the medical institution.

A third-year MBBS student, requesting anonymity told the daily, “It seems that despite all the measures the administration has taken, nothing has improved. Seniors do as they please. Right from dictating dress code to hairstyle, we have to do things as per their command.”

Another third-year MBBS student added, “Sometimes seniors forget that we juniors are also human beings. They say and do demeaning things to us like abusing incessantly and punishing us in various ways if we do not listen to them.”

When the daily asked the Principal on steps being taken to address the said rampant ragging menace continuing at the medical college, the authority stated, “We are committed to preventing exploitation and ragging of the students. Various steps have been taken regarding this, including the creation of a discreet information system to prevent such happenings.”

Earlier the college was in the news after the University Grants Commission (UGC) received a complaint from a first-year MBBS student claiming that he was allegedly ragged by his seniors, who also thrashed him up and tore his clothes.

According to a statement made by the MBBS student, the ragging was rampant in the college and most victims chose to stay silent because they are afraid. “The seniors rag the juniors and force them to do things like abuse or partially strip. If one does not comply, they get beaten up.”
