The existing Puri District Hospital is going to be upgraded to a medical college before June, in line with the Finance Minister’s call in the present budget. The decision to this effect has been taken by the Public Works Department, in consultation with the Health and Family Welfare Department of the region.

After visiting the proposed site in Puri, officials of both the departments have come up with a report along with a set of activities to be taken on speedily for the construction of the medical college and hospital.

Some of the upgradations planned include:

  • Merging of the outpatient department with the casualty and upgrading it to a 30-bed ward

  • Obstetric and gynaecology department moved to the new 50-bed mother-and-child care building and a central oxygen plant set up for supplying of Oxygen to various wards

  • Ophthalmology unit upgraded to house faculty rooms, pantry, nursing rooms, stores, and a library-cum-reading room. A 1,500sq ft plot adjacent to the ophthalmology building will be consumed for this task

  • The infrastructure at the medicine unit redeveloped to house allied wards of pulmonary medicine, psychiatry, and dermatology

  • The surgery unit upgraded, (which presently has 16 general rooms) and converted into a full-fledged ward

"We have been upgrading the infrastructure on the hospital premises for quite some time. However, there is the need for more quality infrastructure for converting the hospital into a medical college. We have analyzed the situation and come up with the activities to be taken up for the purpose," an official of works department told the Telegraph.
