Bhatinda: Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences seems to be facing serious trouble at the hands of the Medical Council of India (MCI), due to the apex regulator discovering gross functional deficiencies in terms of staff salary and infrastructural shortcomings, during an inspection held on April 25, stands quite high.

The MCI’s report revealed grosss salary disparities among assistant professors and senior residents states that some faculty are drawing Rs. 60,000 while others on the same post get an inflated sum of Rs. 2, 50,000; while Junior residents happen to be falling in the scale of Rs. 22,000 only.

Highlighting infrastructural shortcomings, the MCI’s report speaks of the availability of only 20 rooms as against the required 85, as per staff strength. The MCI officials observed that due to shortage of living quarters, many of the residents are housed outside the campus, with only 10 finding living accommodation on the premises. The Council officials state that the inspection of the hostel revealed no room allotment letters had been given to those living on premises and there was no warden appointed either. HOD(orthopaedics) and technicians seemed to be in occupation of rooms that should have otherwise been resident allotments.

Having viewed the above deficiencies the Executive Committee of the Council has taken a decision to revoke the notice issued under the Establishment of Medical College Regulation (amendment), 2010. This is being done as the Council Committee feels that faculty and residency deficiencies, as well as paucity of bed occupancy has gone way below that prescribed in the regulation.

The Executive Committee further on April 28 decided to withdraw recommendation of its recognition of the MBBS degree granted to the institution by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences and Research, Bathinda. It also decided that the Medical College be asked to submit compliance for rectification of deficiencies within a month ending May 28th, 2017, for further consideration, reports The Tribune.

The MCI’s severe criticism of Adesh in the face of gross deficiencies has met with stiff opposition. The opposer is none other than the Institute's Chancellor, H.S. Gill. Terming the Council’s report as incorrect, a miffed Chancellor, reacting to the Council’s strong impending action of revocation of notice issued under the Establishment of Medical College Regulation (amendment), 2010, has said that the college has run for the past 12 years, which would not have been possible without proper infrastructure. The Chancellor maintaining a strong stand has reiterated that 'the institute is open to any inquiry.'
