Punjab: Junior doctors at GMC Patiala and GMC Amritsar on strike after assault
Punjab: Junior doctors at two state medical colleges- GMC Patiala and GMC Amritsar have reportedly been on strike; over alleged case of assault on resident doctors. These doctors are pursuing PG in the twin cities of Punjab.
The alleged incident involves slapping of Dr Manuj Chaudhary, by 3 people who entered the emergency ward of the Government Rajindra Hospital and Medical College, Patiala- in an inebriated state. The doctor was slapped by a relative of the patient who passed away in wee hours of the previous day. Almost 100 PG doctors protested the alleged incident.
A case has been registered under Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty),186 (obstructing public servant) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC against Kulwinder Singh Lucky, Babanpreet Singh Sandy and Jaspreet Singh Prince. All 3 have been arrested on the alleged charges.
While in GMC Amritsar, 3 PG students were allegedly attached by attendants of a patient, who passed away the same morning. The patient was admitted at the Guru Nanak Dev Hospital (GNDH).
In the alleged assault, all 3 PG students attached suffered injuries. Dr Jagbir Singh had a broken arm. Dr Inderjot Kaur and Dr Sukhdeep Singh, also suffered as they made an attempt to prevent the attack of their colleague.
The doctors-students have staged a dharna outside the emergency wing, which led to a halt in the emergency services and OPD at the GMC.
One accused has been arrested so far, who is believed to be carrying blunt weapons at the time of the incident.
Bhaan Singh was admitted in the medicine ward in a critical condition, said Dr BS Bal, Principal of the college to the media. Dr Bal said the patient was suffering from septicaemia and had a history of uncontrolled diabetes, which was conveyed to his attendants.
He said when the patient died, four attendants assaulted Dr Jagbir Singh, Dr Inderjot and Dr Sukhdeep. Later, when the staff nurses and paramedics gathered, three of them escaped, while Baldev was handed over to the police.
Assistant Commissioner of Police BK Singla in addition implied that a case of assault and giving injuries to a public servant on-duty has been filed against the three alleged accused.
Doctors at GMC Patiala are now on duty. They had a discussion with the Director of Medical Education.
Dr Gagandeep Singh Sidhu, president of the Resident Doctors Association, Patiala implied that their demands of increasing security, backed by demands of CCTV cameras installation has been adhered to. The alleged accused has also been arrested.
On the other hand, the protest at GMC Amritsar is ongoing, with many doctor still protesting on the issue.
Dr Gagandeep Shergill, a PG student and senior vice-president of the Punjab PCMS Association, demanded adequate security measures in the hospital. He said a few days ago, they had suggested to the authorities to close down multiple entries to the hospital and emergency ward, besides regulating the presence of attendants near the patient.
He said only one or two attendants should be allowed near the patient.
