Amritsar: The Medical Council of India (MCI), inspection is underway at the Government Medical College. The inspection is crucial, for its results will decide seat allotment for the 3rd batch. The earlier seat increase from 150 to 200 had happened last year. The recent inspection commenced on Monday.

The college in anticipation of the inspection had issued a circular that no employee would go on leave as the inspection could begin any time. Principal, Dr Tejbir Singh said, “The MCI team will submit its report to the Union Ministry of Health. The ministry will get in touch with the college in case any shortcomings are listed by the team.”

He also revealed that the college had complied to the earlier shortcomings pointed out at inspections and had also upgraded its infra structural deficiencies.

The MCI during its last visit noted 11.6 per cent faculty shortage. It had also raised minor objections regarding non-centralised OPD and the non-working intercom system.

As the Council has many a times in the past rejected the college’s seat increase proposal, therefore, Council satisfaction this time was crucial for maintaining the present 200 seat number, added an official.

According to college sources faculty shortages in the college are a result of delay in holding meetings of the departmental promotion committee and in posting of advertisement for vacant posts.

The officials are of the opinion that if the MCI comes up with objections after the current inspection, there is no immediate cause to worry, as the college will have time to entertain the Council’s suggestions and recommendations and on compliance call them for a review, reports The Tribune.
