Punjab: Faculty protests at Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital
Punjab: The faculty at Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital at Banur (a district 25 km from Chandigarh) has been protesting over the release of their salaries.
Reportedly, the work at the college has come to a halt over past 20 days as the faculty has not been paid their salaries for the past six months. There has been similar protest in the past too as the concerned college authorities have failed to release salaries for months together earlier also.
Several rounds of discussion between the management and the faculty have given no results as yet. As a result, faculty has threatened a strike from February 25.
Only emergency services, all OPD services and teaching has been operating normally at the institute. This issue has become a serious worry for 500 MBBS students at the college.
It is not only the students which are suffering but the college is also facing a faculty shortage now. There are many junior doctors who have resigned over the prevailing issue, and as a result each department is facing a staff crunch; also as per the MCI norms.
The patients are also reported to be suffering in the region because of the ongoing strike. They are now required to go to Chandigarh, Patiala, or Ludhiana for serious medical attention.
As reported by Tribune, “The current situation has been repeatedly brought to the notice of the Vice-Chancellor of the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) and Hussan Lal, Secretary of the Medical Education and Research Department, but no solution has been provided till now,” a teacher said.
Meanwhile, Secretary of the Medical Education and Research Department of Punjab Hussan Lal said he had already directed the BFUHS Vice-Chancellor to evaluate the situation and they had already visited their campus on March 14.
“I will soon receive the report and suitable action would be initiated based on the report,” he said.
