Chandigarh: The Selection process for the new Director/ Principal at the Government Medical College and Hospital(GMCH)32 will take off soon as communication between the UT health department and the UPSC has begun. The UT health department has recommended to the UPSC changes in the recruitment rules.

As per the UT health department recommendations, the tenure for the post of the director principal was to be 3 years if the eligibility criteria were 59 years of age and five years if eligibility was to be 57 years. The UT health department will begin deliberations on it soon.

However, sources say that the maximum age will be 59 years making 8 senior GMCH doctors eligible for the post.

With Dr. Atul Sachdeva having retired as director principal on April 23 and Dr. AK Janmeja taking over only to complete his tenure by December end the recruitment rules will soon be revised and the post advertised all over again."We are examining all this and shall soon decide," said Anurag Aggarwal, UT home-cum-health secretary.

"After the post is advertised by the UPSC, applicants are given 45 days to apply. So, the decision must be immediately taken by the UT on the upper age limit," said a faculty member.

The GMCH had recommended 54 years as the maximum age limit with a five-year tenure, instead of the present 55 years and a 3-year tenure. The draft prepared in March had further recommended that director-principal on completion of his five-year term, could head a department until he turns 62, the age of retirement.

The UT administration had decided to draft the amended rules for the post as requests from senior GMCH faculty members have requested for the change in rules this January, reports TOI.
