Punjab: Class 10 certificate compulsory for appearing for UG medical courses
Punjab: Students seeking admission to undergraduate medical courses in the state will now be compulsory required to produce their Class 10 certificate (completed from Punjab). This will be mandatory starting from the session 2019-20.
The new protocol will apply from 2019-20 because already students have passed class 11 and 12 for the next three (including current) academic sessions.
The rule also applies to the natives studying in boarding schools outside the state.
In an earlier decision by the Punjab and Haryana High Court concerning the matter on July 2, 2014, this three-year window was granted. Then, the state government had thought of implementing the Class 10 rule which would have rendered many young aspirants ineligible as they had not done class 10 from Punjab. Therefore, the new rule was refused by the court.
As a part of this recent notification only student who is bona-fide resident of Punjab will be allowed medical seats in the upcoming sessions.
Only the next three batches of Class 12 will enjoy the exemption. “Beyond that, you won’t be eligible for our medical colleges without passing Class 10 from Punjab,” state medical education secretary Hussan Lal told HT here on Tuesday. “If outside students want to join medical colleges in Punjab three years on, they must enter Class 10 in the state in the session 2016-17. Both parents and students have enough time to make up their mind,” he added.
As reported by HT, welcoming the new move, Chandigarh-based PMT (pre-medical test) trainer Arvind Goyal said students now had time to adjust. “Punjab attracts so many students from outside because it has more than 10 medical colleges with nearly 800 MBBS (bachelor of medicine and bachelor or surgery) and more than 1,000 BDS (bachelor of dental science) seats,” he added.
In addition, the proposed threefold increase in the MBBS/BDS tuition fee in the state-run colleges has been ruled out in the upcoming session by the Punjab medical education. However, this doesn’t completely rule out a fee hike in the next session.
