Faridkot: The Gian Sagar Medical College student shift faced a major impediment when 114 students of the 2008-11 batch of the college’s medical dental and nursing branches were not allotted a college by the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences(BFUHS). The university though has shifted 1,437 students of 5 batches of Gian Sagar after its closure.

The 114 students, which included 52 MBBS and 36 BDS students, though wenhaving gone through their document verification exercise, did not get any college allotments, as a nod from the Medical Council of India, (MCI) and the Dental Council of India is called for, as per the Department of Medical Education and Research (DMER), directive on the shifting of this batch.

According to the BFUHS, only 5 of these 114 require to be shifted to other colleges as the rest have either to sit for their supplementary exam or complete their internships.

“As these students have already attended the required number of lectures and tutorial classes, there is no need to shift them to any other college to attend classes,” said the university authorities to the Tribune.

The BFUHS revealed that 81 of these students had their 1 year internships to complete while 21 needed to sit for their supplementary exam.

“Besides, seven MBBS students have submitted the proof of completing internship, there are only five students who need shifting,” said Chairman, Counselling Committee (student Shift), Dr Raj Bahadur.

It is believed of these 114 students, 3 residing abroad were unable to attend the counselling, a possible reason for the rest not being allotted colleges.

“This is unfair. The students have already suffered a lot,” said a parent. “Our repeated requests to allot new colleges to those in attendance were turned down.”

“The university will suggest to the government to shift the students through a draw of lots in Chandigarh, so that they don’t have to travel all the way here,” said Vice-Chancellor, Dr Raj Bahadur to the HT.
