Pune: New mentorship program at B J Government Medical College
Maharashtra: A new mentorship program has been introduced by the B J Government Medical College for the recently admitted MBBS students. The medical college has launched the initiative along with Sassoon General Hospital in Pune.
Under the program, there will students from the 2015-16 batch allotted to the faculty of the college. The faculty in turn, will be their appointed mentors. They will ensure welfare, progress, and complete development of the students; more as good doctors and good society members.
Dean of BJGMC Ajay Chandanwale told the Indian Express that the mentors would interact as frequently as required with the students and take appropriate steps to help and counsel them, regarding their academic performance during the first year of MBBS.
In addition, he implied that the problems of the students will be identified and resolved with the help of appointed mentors. This mentoring partnership has been forged to strengthen relations between students, their parents, and the faculty. It will also be a long-term relationship, all through the student’s medical education.
Associate Professor of Department of Biochemistry Somnath Salgar also implied that the college will also work towards enhancing the overall personality of each student. Overall personality development is one of the main agenda. There are few cases in the college, especially first year students, who are from rural areas. They often feel homesick, and also, have a kind of social inferiority complex. We seek to help such students, by training them in communication skills, starting from their first day in the college.
Deputy Dean Arun Kowale in addition implied that the college has even granted scholarships to students from drought-affected. They are meritorious students recognised by NGO Foundation For Excellence and granted scholarships to 16 students. Another NGO Mukul Madhav Foundation has given scholarships to 8 medical and 2 nursing students. The scholarship endorses their fees, books and mess bills.
