One day training session on pancreatobiliary cancer at JIPMER

Puducherry: A one day continuing ‘Medical Education Program’ in treating patients with pancreatobiliary cancer was hosted by the Department of Medical Gastroenterology, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) and other medical colleges in the union territory, recently.


Pancreatobiliary cancers which occur in the pancreas, bile duct, and major duodenal papilla are difficult to identify in the initial stages.


The survival rate of patients suffering from Pancreatobiliary cancers has not improved much despite improvements in diagnostic modalities and techniques in surgery, and less than 20% are being treated surgically.


Management of patients suffering from pancreatobiliary cancer is complex and requires expertise in many disciplines felt experts attending the program, reported TOI.


The team that trained the faculty members and residents, included Ebby George Simon from Christian Medical College, R Ravi from Global Hospitals, Chennai and specialists from Jipmer.


According to these experts, treatment of patients in advanced stages of this cancer calls for a multidisciplinary approach, emphasizing on good palliative care.


Jipmer, Medical Superintendent, Ashok Shankar Badhe inaugurated the programme in the presence of Dean (academic) R P Swaminathan, and Professor and Head of Gastroenterology, Abdoul Hamide, and Assistant Professor, Pazhanivel Mohan.
