Puducherry: JIPMER has recently introduced the fifth MCI basic course for faculty development in medical colleges. A four day workshop is being conducted to introduce the program, with an objective to make reforms in medical education. It is reported that the faculty of medical colleges in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu have confirmed their participation in the program.

JIPMER Director S.C. Parija implied that there is an urgent requirement for introducing reforms in medical education, to address the present challenges of the medical education in India. The MBBS curriculum, for example has been static for the past three decades. He also opines that there is a witnessed increase in knowledge base of science, specifically clinical and lab medicine, giving another reason for a change in the MBBS curriculum. In addition, there should be more focus on student oriented and developing knowledge, skills, and attitude of students, by creating a balanced enjoinment. Medical teachers will have an important role to play to help reshape the curriculum.

He further implied that taking these steps into consideration, JIPMER has taken steps to reshape the medical education at UG and PG levels. It is being done with an objective to groom doctors to deliver quality healthcare at all levels. Besides, doctors will also be encouraged to take up leadership roles.

Besides, the new curriculum will also include a foundation course, incorporating new technologies such as IT and e-learning. This will be done for enhancement of students capabilities and help in meeting curricular objectives.

It has been further reported in the media that the Department of Medical Education at JIPMER has been conducting faculty development programmes since 1976 and has trained more than 1,800 medical educators. Earlier this month, it opened the MCI regional centre for faculty development programmes.
