Chennai: The protest staged by service doctors, postgraduate students and non-service postgraduate doctors against the alleged non-transparency in doctor recruitment in the existing 465 vacancies was called off after a meeting with senior officials of the state health department, including the Health Secretary, H, J Radhakrishnan on Thursday. The vacancies had been allotted through emergency counselling.

The demand raised by Service doctors was of recruitment through regular counselling as a number of government postgraduate students and non-service postgraduate doctors have yet to find employment, despite the completion of their term. The assurance given by senior officials of State Health Department of necessary action convinced the agitators to call off their protest. However, a few demanded a written assurance and continued with their protest.

A government medical college, service doctor, Dr D Silambarasan, speaking to the Deccan Chronicle was quoted as saying, “The demands to look into the violation of GO number 131 that lays down the regulations for emergency counselling stating that allotted seats should not be made in urban areas and the specialists should be placed in their respective departments have been considered by the authorities.”

The issue in all likelihood will be taken up by the medical recruitment board to decide on the matter of re-allotment of seats.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that 700 service doctors, postgraduate students and non-service postgraduate doctors from all over the state staged a protest outside the Directorate of Medical Education on this issue
