Protest at Punjab Medical College over Sexual Harassment complaint against prof, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar visit
Chandigarh: Objecting to the visit of Spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, members of Punjab Students Union (PSU) observed a major protest during his lecture at the institute. Following the commotion, around 50 students were rounded up by the Police.
The students accused the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) authorities of promoting RSS ideologies to its affiliated medical college where only scientific and medical researches should be encouraged for the educational gain of medical students.
The students resorted to strike to draw attention to the authorities' alleged inaction on a sexual harassment complaint against a Head of Department (HoD) filed by female medico at the institute, who is observing a protest since 10 days. The students have demanded the arrest of the accused.
The medico had filed the complaint in August this year, but no FIR has been registered and all the internal inquires are pending. The students alleged that Vice-Chancellor has been shielding the doctor and not taking her complaint seriously.

As Ravi Shankar was addressing the gathering of faculty and students at the medical college auditorium about 3 pm, a female member of the student union, sitting among medical students, shouted slogans against the VC, seeking an FIR against the HoD, reports HT.
She claimed that woman doctors were not safe in the medical college and authorities are trying to save a senior doctor accused of sexual harassment, adds TOI.
Speaking to The Indian Express, State secretary, PSU accused the VC of giving saffron colour to the medical college by promoting RSS ideology and said that the university is inviting such speakers who think that government schools and colleges should be closed because they breed Naxalites. This was a statement made by the Spiritual leader in the year 2012.
The PSU secretary said, "We will not tolerate such speakers in a medical university or medical college. The VC is promoting RSS ideology and trying to saffronize the campus. On the pious soil of Faridkot where Baba Farid preached humanity, V-C is calling speakers who promote RSS and divisiveness. Instead of taking action against the doctor who has been accused of sexual harassment, the V-C is busy inviting such speakers."
After the protest, the police detained over 50 students. No arrests have been made so far. Students, however, alleged that police used force and 'manhandled' them.
