Private matric schools to provide NEET coaching as HC quashes GO

The HC judges said the students could receive coaching for the NEET and other entrance examinations, but such classes should not be held for any other purpose.

Madurai: The Madras High Court has recently permitted private matriculation schools to conduct coaching sessions during summer break for class XI and XII students who wish to appear in National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET).

Justices N Kirubakaran and S S Sundar gave the direction on a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) from Vijayaraghavan, who sought to quash a Government Order (GO) that private schools should not hold coaching classes during the summer vacation and that action would be taken against them for violation of the order.

He also said the CBSE schools were holding coaching classes for National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) and other exams and students could get training there.

The petitioner submitted it was essential for schools to prepare students for the medical entrance examination and competitive exams for entry to various courses and that they would feel comfortable being coached in the school they were studying.

National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test 2019 will be conducted on 5th May 2019 (Sunday) from 02:00 p.m. to 05:00 p.m. The duration of the test will be three (03) hours.

The largest entrance examination for Under-Graduate (UG) medical courses, National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is the gateway for admissions to medical (MBBS), dental (BDS), and AYUSH courses in the country. NEET 2019 will be conducted as per regulations of the Indian Medical Council Act-1956 and the Dentists Act-1948, and as amended from time to time.

Earlier, the Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE) used to conduct the entrance examination, but this year the examination conducting body assigned by the government for NEET is National Testing Agency (NTA).
