PGIMER awarded 2nd time in succession for Organ Donation

Chandigarh: The best hospital category award for this year for institutional offering to the promotion of the cadaver organ donation program has gone to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) for its outstanding contribution, stated an institute communication.


The award was given away at an event organized to celebrate 8th Indian Organ Donation Day by NOTTO () in New Delhi by Anupriya Patel, Minister of State of Health and Family Welfare.


This is the 2nd year in succession that the PGIMER, Chandigarh has been awarded for leading in its contribution towards the deceased organ donation programme. among the government sector hospitals nationally.


The other two hospitals in the top three categories that received the ‘Best Hospital’ awards were private hospitals from Telangana and Pune respectively.


On behalf of the PGI, the award was received by Dr Vipin Koushal, Nodal Officer, ROTTO, PGIMER, Dr Naveen Pandey, Assistant Professor, Department of Hospital Administration, and Saryu D Madra, Consultant (IEC/Media) ROTTO, PGIMER, from the Minister of State, reports Tribune.


Prof Jagat Ram, Director, PGI, expressing his delight over the institute’s achievement said: “It’s an honour to be acknowledged nationally as first amongst the public sector hospitals for our contribution towards the promotion of deceased organ donation program for the second year successively. We at the PGI dedicate this award to all brave heart donor families whose magnanimous gesture helped saving hundreds of lives and in fact, sustain the deceased donation program at the PGI.”


In the “Donor Families” category, Ashima and Alka from Chandigarh were felicitated for their family’s magnanimous decision to donate the organs of their daughter Priyanka. Priyanka, 23, also a volunteer for the organ donation program had during her lifetime worked tirelessly for the cause. She met with a fatal accident on February 2, 2017, and after being declared brain dead, her parents decided to donate her organs. Ironically, her organs helped save five precious lives.
