Chandigarh: Having excelled in its initiative to boost eye donation, the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research(PGIMER), has been bestowed the health excellence award at the World Hospital Congress in Taiwan revealed the institute authorities on Thursday.

The PGI statement said of the 131 entries from 90 organizations in 24 countries, eyeing top honours, PGI emerged as the preferred choice for being conferred with the Health Excellence Award for Leadership and Management in Healthcare at the 41st World Hospital Congress organized by the International Hospital Federation in Taiwan.

This prestigious award was received by Professor A K Gupta on behalf of the institute at an impressive and high-profile award ceremony in Taipei on Wednesday evening, said officials.

The statement, quoted Medical Superintendent-cum- Department Head, Hospital Administration, PGIMER, Dr A K Gupta as saying:"the testimony to the success of this intervention can be gauged from the fact that there has been a whopping 93 percent tangible increase in the rate of eye donation at the institute in the post-intervention phase, which was launched in 2014," reports TNIE .

"It is a huge satisfaction that the increase in eye donation has not only given the 'gift of sight' to a significantly much higher number of corneal blind patients but also intangibly helped in overcoming the earlier resistance of all cadres of hospital staff towards this noble cause. This enthusiasm has spilt over into the cadaver donation program helping PGI run one of the most successful transplantation programs in the country," his statement further added.
