Bengaluru: The year 2018-19 might witness an increase in Post Graduate Medical seats in Government Medical Colleges of the state. The central government has announced that under the 'one time increase of seats'. the State Department of Medical Education(DME), will soon be submitting a proposal to the Medical Council of India(MCI). The department has received an official communication from the Council and is preparing individual proposals for each college.

The deadline to apply to the Council is January 19. All incomplete applications will be rejected by the apex education regulator.

According to the department, out of the 16 government medical colleges, 10 offer postgraduate courses and all have clinical courses. "As the increase will be based on the teacher-student ratio, we are submitting a detailed proposal individually for each college," said a department official.

"We have to be careful while submitting the proposal. In case there is a small error or any incomplete data, then we will lose the opportunity to get a one-time increase, and we will get rejected," he added.

Presently, the total number of PG seats available for MD (Doctorate in Medicine) and MS (Master of Surgery) in government medical colleges in the state is 747, while PG diploma has a seat strength of 175. According to officials, this will double the PG seat number in the state, reports TNIE.

As per the revised teacher-student ratio, the professor-student ratio has increased from 1:2 to 1:3 and that of associate professor from 1:1 to 1:2; resulting in the doubling of student intake, as well.
