Patna: The de-recognition issue of the post-graduate orthopaedics course at Patna Medical College was raised through a point of order in the Legislative Council by the JDU member Satish Kumar on Friday.

Satish Kumar was seen standing up to the house after it resumed session post lunch to bring to its notice the importance of the issue which he said concerned the future of the students, who were keen on pursuing postgraduate courses after their MBBS.

The MLC was seen holding a copy of the MCI letter sent to the PMC in this regard as well a note that he wrote to Health Minister, Mangal Pandey on Friday drawing his attention to the problem.

Council Deputy Chairman, Harun Rashid directed Satish to present the copies of the documents on the floor of the House and asked the government to take notice.

The MLC’s letter to the health minister holds an official of the health department responsible for the problem.

According to him, the orthopaedics department could solve the problem through granting promotions to the existing faculty members to the rank of professor.

The MCI has cited the paucity of professor rank faculty as the shortcoming in the postgraduate orthopaedics department functioning at PMC.

Of the 14 sanctioned professor posts in government medical colleges, say sources, only one is occupied - at Darbhanga Medical College. The remaining 13 posts are lying vacant.

Satish's communication to the minister presented transfer of a dozen associate professors to the rank of the professor as a solution to the problem.

"I have also urged the health minister to take action against the official and get his functioning probed," he told The Telegraph.

Satish said that he would remain in communication with the health minister to know whether the situation called for correctional measures.

"After all, this issue concerns the future of medical students. It is the responsibility of everyone to get this problem addressed on a priority basis," he added.

PMC, Principal, Vijay Kumar Gupta on Thursday said that that he had already called for a compliance report from the orthopaedics department.

"After getting these details, a compliance report would be sent to the MCI urging it to do a re-inspection before reaching any final decision," he added.
