PG Anaesthesia Suicide: Index Medical College to be visited by court appointed committee soon

The formation of the Committee directive was issued in the light of the suicide of Smriti Laharpure, a postgraduate medical student on the premises of the college.

Indore: In an attempt to restore an academic environment at Index Medical College, Indore the principal bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court has issued directives to form a three-member committee of advocates to review the affairs at the medical college . The decision follows the alleged suicide of a postgraduate final year student of the college.


The bench of Justice Ravi Shankar Jha and Justice Mohd Fahim Anwar have responded to the petition filed by medical students of Index Medical College against the authorities for pressurizing the students over fees and other issues.


In an earlier story done by Medical Dialogues it was reported that a PG student of Index Medical College had committed suicide by injecting herself with a heavy dose of anesthesia through intra-cath. The father of the deceased has accused the college management of the death.

"Dr Smriti Laharpure (32), a resident of Bhopal, was found dead in her hostel room at Index Medical College and it appears that she injected herself with the anaesthetic at around 1:30 am," Khudail Police Station in charge Hakam Singh Pawar informed PTI. She was a student of PG Anaesthesia at the college.

The deceased wrote a 12-page suicide note in which she accused certain officials who allegedly harassed her because she protested against the arbitrary hikes in fees.

Following this, the Chairman of Index Medical College along with the Head of the Anesthesia Department had been booked under IPC 306 for abetment to suicide.

The courts looking at the circumstances have given a directive to the committee to visit Indore and submit their report within the next one week.


The bench in the interim order ruled, "Prima facie, it appears that students are studying in an atmosphere of fear and harassment."

The investigating officer from Khudel police station who was present before the court on Wednesday presented the case diary to the court. The three Committee members appointed by the court include advocates Arpan Pawar, Aditya Adhikari, and Vibhudhendra Mishra, who will be visiting the college in Indore, at the expense of the institution, reported TOI.
