Patna: Indira Gandhi Institute of Cardiology to have 300 beds, 5 OTs, 2 labs in its new building
Patna: Residents of Bihar are tremendously going to benefit as Indira Gandhi Institute of Cardiology (IGIC) is on its path to increase its bed strength from current 145 to 300 in its newly constructed building which is expected to become active by the end of October next year.
Indira Gandhi Institute of Cardiology is situated in the heart of Patna in the Patna Medical College Campus.
This is the first specialised Cardiac Care Centre under the Dept. of Health and Medical Welfare Govt of Bihar. This hospital at present is the only pure Cardiology Govt. Hospital in the State of Bihar
As per recent media reports, the newly constructed building of the hospital, along with an increased number of beds, there will be five operation theaters to be set up, two catheterization laboratories, and medical and surgical intensive care units, each having 50 beds. The new building is G+9 and will have additional facilities such as a seminar hall, an auditorium, and a library.

In a recently held press conference, IGIC director Dr S S Chatterjee informed, "It is the only super specialty hospital under Bihar government in terms of cardiac health care. Though the hospital lagged behind in terms of infrastructure and manpower in comparison with other reputed autonomous hospitals such as Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences at Patna, it will regain its reputation once again after the new building becomes functional next year."
"Total 77,500 patients have registered in the outpatient department for various heart-related diseases from January 1 to December 15 this year. The hospital has conducted 33 open heart surgeries and 24 closed heart surgeries during the same period. Besides, 894 patients have been benefited with free of cost permanent pacemaker implantation during the period," quotes TOI.
According to one of the sources, the IGIC is having an acute shortage of doctors, paramedical staffs and nurses other than infrastructure. Out of the total 628 approved posts, 219 are lying vacant. The hospital had sent a proposal to state health department in November to fill 1,083 posts, but there was no response so far, reports TOI.
