Ranchi: A new medical college and hospital will be set up by Coal India Limited (CIL) in the state. An announcement to this effect was made by the Chief of Medical Services of CCL, PK Gupta. The company’s board has already granted an approval for it, and the establishment is now in the planning stage he added.

The new hospital is part of the development scheme of 2009, to upgrade existing hospitals into medical colleges with state and centre’s financial grants. The government is supposed to be the scheme beneficiary, for it would be given more medical seats, which in turn would put an end to doctor shortage in the state

The state government had earlier approached corporate houses like Bokaro Steel Limited and Tata Steel, besides Coal India, for up gradation of hospitals into medical colleges in 2009.

Meanwhile, free outpatient (OPD) services to citizens above the age of 60 will be provided by a Ranchi based hospital. Another Free OPD service is also being initiated by Bhagwan Mahavir Medica Super Specialty Hospital, for two hours from Tuesday for senior citizens of the state. This service will be provided during the evening and will have orthopedics, gynaecologists, neurologists and physicians attending to the aged. "In-house medical consultations for senior citizens will be under special concession," Kumar told the TOI.
