In yet another shocker, a 17-year-old girl committed suicide by hanging in her house at sub-urban Uthamarkoil, here on Wednesday late night, after she allegedly failed to qualify the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

Police said the girl K.Subashree was found hanging from the ceiling in the bedroom. She was rushed to a nearby private hospital by her parents, where the doctors declared her brought dead.

Her father V.Kannan is working as a driver in Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), Cantonment branch, Tiruchirapalli.

Family members alleged that Subashree had scored 907 marks out of the total 1200 in her XII board examinations. She aspired to become a doctor and attempted NEET.

The girl went into a state of depression since Monday after the Central Board of Secondary Education announced the NEET results.

Subashree is the second student to commit suicide in Tamil Nadu allegedly due to clear the NEET this year. A Dalit medical aspirant S.Pradeepa, hailing from Peruvalur village in Villupuram district committed suicide by consuming poison on Monday night after she allegedly failed to clear NEET.

Last year, Anitha, daughter of a poor Dalit coolie laborer ended her life by hanging in Ariyalur district after she failed to crack the NEET.

The State government and the Opposition parties were strongly opposing NEET on the grounds that the exam was creating undue stress and meritorious students from economically marginalized sections and rural areas were not able to afford private coaching in cities.

Tamil Nadu had earlier obtained Presidential assent for exemption from NEET, but the Centre opposed it and made NEET compulsory in the state since last year.
