Odisha: Balasore, Bolangir Medical Colleges to become Teaching Hospitals
Bhubaneswar: To improve medical education and to cater to the needs of the qualified doctors, the Odisha government has decided to construct teaching hospitals at new government-run medical colleges at Balasore and Bolangir.
The decision for construction of teaching hospitals was taken at the state Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik recently.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported about the commencement of MBBS course at government-run Medical Colleges in Balasore and Bolangir. Both Medical Colleges have the capacity of 100 MBBS seats each.
In June this year, the Medical Council of India (MCI) had accorded its approval for MBBS admission in four Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) in Odisha for the academic year 2019-2020. Both, Fakir Mohan Medical College and Hospital in Balasore and Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Balangir had successfully received the medical council's permission for second batch of MBBS course.

Now, in a major development, Chief Secretary Asit Tripathy said the Cabinet has approved the lowest percentage rate composite tender of M/S Iron Triangle Ltd to construct the teaching hospitals both at Balasore and Bolangir.
The teaching hospital at Bolangir will be constructed with a cost of Rs 142.45 crore, while the cost of the Balasore teaching hospital was settled at Rs 144.98 crore, he said.

Each of the teaching hospitals would have 500 beds, service block, medical gases pipeline system, ESS building and external work, Tripathy said, adding the construction work would be completed within a period of two years and six months.
The Cabinet has also approved tender for executing rural piped water supply project in 17 panchayats of Nilagiri block under Balasore district with an investment of Rs 149.12 crore. Over 90,000 people of 90 villages will be benefited from the project.
A proposal for widening and strengthening of the Tomka-Mangalpur road in Jajpur district at a cost of Rs 117 crore was approved by the Cabinet. The amount will be provided from District Mineral Fund (DMF) and will be completed in 2 years, Tripathy said.

The Chief Secretary said government has also decided to lease out 2.478 acre government land in Bankual mouza in Bhubaneswar tehsil to the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan free of premium and incidental charges for establishment of Zonal Institute of Education & Training.
The proposals for regularization of 32 court managers, amendment to Odisha Taxation & Accounts Services Rules-2011 and renaming officers of small savings cadre as small savings & financial inclusion officers have been approved in the meeting.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that with numerous medical colleges failing inspections on the grounds of infrastructural and organizational deficiencies, the Medical Council of India (MCI) is mulling over to revise its policy to provide its permission only to those medical colleges which have a functional hospital for a span of at least three years.
