Tinisukia: The first medical college in Northeastern India, Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) is today in dire need of nursing staff allege the All Assam Nurses’ Association report. There are only 215 nurses in the AMCH against 248 posts allege sources, to Newsflash.

The AANA alleges that no initiative has been taken in the direction of nurse recruitments in the hospital by the government, either. So pathetic is the situation that instead of one nurse looking after 3 patients as per MCI norms, 50 are being catered to by one, says General Secretary, All Assam Nurses’ Association Dibrugarh unit, Junu Chutia Dihingia. She admits it to have become difficult to do justice to all, as their nurse-in-charge.

Despite several requests for filling of vacancies, the authorities seem to be turning a deaf ear.

The National Health Mission and contractual provisions, call for there being 90 nurses along with 35 ward sisters in the Hospital which according to Ms Dihingia is a small number still.

Formerly known as Berry White Medical School, Assam Medical College, is an educational institution of Dibrugarh, Assam.
