NTR University NEET counselling commences, and so does protest on GO 550
The 2nd phase of counselling is to witness 800 BDS vacancies and 297 MBBS slots getting filled.
Vijayawada: After a long delay in the process of counselling for MBBS and BDS seats in the state of Telangana, NEET aspirants who could not find a place in the first phase of medical Counselling, got aboard the NTR University of Health Science's 2nd phase of counselling, on Saturday. However, this happened amid protests voiced by BC, SC and ST candidates demanding implementation of GO 550.
Web options-Online were exercised by a strength of 3000 candidates. While the university had sports and NCC quota candidates visit it for the 2nd phase of NEET UG Counselling.
The 2nd phase of counselling will witness 800 BDS vacancies and 297 MBBS slots getting filled reported the TNIE.
64 national pool seats allotted back to the state will also join the counselling fray, with another 283 state college seats getting a filling opportunity after the first phase of counselling. These vacancies are a result of candidates failing to report for admissions. The above are the targeted seats meant to find students in the second phase of counselling.
While this fervent activity was going on, students' Joint Action Committee consisting of BC, SC and ST candidates called for a 'Chalo Vijayawada' on August 20, demanding for the implementation of GO 550 for the benefit of BC, SC and ST candidates.
The leaders of BC, SC and ST Welfare Associations contended that the reserved categories were losing their seats after a stay had been imposed on them by the High Court, claiming that implementation of the same would create an imbalance in the 50:50 ratio between the reserved and the open categories and cut into the interest of the meritorious.
The backward category associations, however, reiterated that the implementation of the order would actually help the reserved candidates to realize their dreams.
The Association also alleged that the ongoing 2nd phase of counselling was heading against the interests of the reserved categories.
AIYF, City Secretary, Charan Sai; YSRF, District, President, D Anji Reddy; SFI City Secretary, Sumanth; Helping Hands leader, Sivarama Krishna; PDSU, City Secretary, Rajesh; Jana Sena City Leader, Harish and others were present reported Nyoooz.
The Chief Minister, Nara Chandrababu Naidu was blamed by the student leaders for overlooking BC, SC and ST candidate interests, who also announced their decision to stage a protest against the Chief Minister demanding the issuance of another GO Order, before the commencement of the 2nd counseling.
GO 550 issued on 30th July 2001 by the state government on seat allotment in professional colleges, categorically states that open category seats are to be first filled on a merit basis, and followed by the filling of the reserved category, in accordance with norms.
Meanwhile, the Convenor quota counselling will end at 1 pm on Aug 20, followed by the commencement of the Management quota counselling from Aug 21.
In an earlier story done by the Medical Dialogues team it was reported that An Andhra Pradesh Government Order(GO), mandated filling of vacancy of a medical seat by a student from the reserved category, only if the vacancy arose due to the decision of the student from the reserved category to move from the seat secured by him in open category, was stayed by a High Court division bench.
