Amritsar: The Government Medical College (GMC) of Amritsar has banned girls from wearing skirts, t-shirts, jeans and shorts in the college premises. Boys have also been asked to wear formal trousers instead of jeans, according to a circular issued by college Principal Sujata Sharma, GMC Amritsar.

The head of the department has been asked to ensure that the dress code is followed by all the students, it said. The administration intends to create uniformity in the campus. Many colleges and institutes in India have fixed uniform. This brings the equality and maintains the decorum of the place. The new dress code will come into effect from October 1.

Jagran Josh reports that move has sparked a controversy in the campus among the MBBS students. Medicos were seen opposing the circular and raising their voices against the issue, stating that 'We live in a country which is rapidly growing'-Therefore, they are free to choose what they want to wear keeping the dignity of the place in mind.

A group of students, led by their leader Mansimrat Singh, Wednesday met the college principal, requesting her to withdraw the circular.

However, Sharma declined to withdraw it, the students said.

Councillor Sandhya Sikka, Leader of the Opposition in the Municipal Corporation (MC) House, told The Tribune, "I am in favour of girls wearing jeans trousers as these make them more comfortable. It brings a sense of liberty."

"During the course of administration, there are several discipline-related issues which gain more focus, eclipsing the main work. So the administrators tend to make decisions with respect to such situations,"she added

This is not the first time such a circular has been issued by a medical college. Earlier this year in an effort to straightjacket the MBBS students, two medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh had laid strictures on its student community for wearing jeans and T-shirts to college and growing stylish beards.
