Nilgiris to get its first medical college soon, confirms Tamil Nadu Minister

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Municipal Administration Minister S P Velumani recently made a confirmation on the establishment of the first medical college in the hilly Nilgiris district.

He said, "Work to set up the first medical college in the hilly Nilgiris district will begin soon."

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that in a major development towards enhancing the medical education sector in the state, the Tamil Nadu government is set to add 1,350 MBBS seats in the next academic year 2020-21 by establishing a total of 9 medical colleges. Each medical college will have 150 MBBS seats for students.

As of July 2019, the state is reported to have had 7150 MBBS seats across 49 Medical colleges. Of these 3400 MBBS seats are in 26 government medical colleges while 3750 MBBS seats are there in the state 23 private medical institutes.

With the setting up of 9 medical colleges, the state will get 1,350 MBBS seats taking the MBBS pool to 8500+.

The establishment of 6 medical colleges was confirmed with the sanctioned amount of Rs 600 crore released recently for commencing the construction work of 6 new medical colleges in Dindigul, Namakkal, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, the Nilgiris and Tiruppur districts.

The State government had applied seeking permission to establish the colleges in Krishnagiri, Nagapattinam and Tiruvallur districts.

Now, the hills is about to get its first medical college. "As the building of now-defunct Hindustan Photo Films is in good condition, the college will come up there and work is likely to be completed by the end of the year, the minister informed PTI.

Velumani, who was here to distribute welfare schemes to the tune of Rs 16.45 crore, said the government will sanction 100 green houses to those affected by the recent rains.


Similarly, the district administration's request to construct two bridges which were washed away in the floods a couple of days ago, at an outlay of Rs 10 crore, will be taken to the Chief Minister for approval, he said.


The state is also making developments on the PG front. Recently, 2 Tamil Nadu medical colleges bagged the approval by the Medical Council of India (MCI) to offer PG Medical course in MD Blood Transfusion and Immunohematology with a total of 5 seats — 2 at Madurai Medical College and 3 have been approved for the Tirunelveli Medical College. These medical institutes will begin the course from the next academic year 2020.
