New Principal of GMC, Amritsar promises Upgradation of college

Amritsar: Government Medical College Amritsar, saw its new Principal Dr. Sohan Singh take charge on Monday. A Radio Diagnosis professor, Dr. Singh plans to improve medical services for patients attached to the college hospital.

“The first challenge is to make improvement in the services for poor patients. I will start working on this agenda immediately. Upgrade of the college and the hospital will also be a priority,” he said. Sources say several senior faculty members are indulged in private practice. So it will not be easy for him to improve the services without checking private practice. Dr Singh said, “I will have to understand such issues and make plans accordingly. But for sure, nobody will be allowed to bypass the laws, ” he announced on his first day at work.

Government Medical College, Amritsar traces its foundation as a Medical School in Lahore in 1864. It was later relocated to Amritsar in 1920.

The college has a cherished history and earned for itself a place of pride in the field of medical education and patient care in the region. Over the years the school has emerged as a nursery of medical teachers and trained physicians who have fanned out in the country to serve as key participants in private as well as public healthcare in order to meet the growing needs of the nation.

Inclusion of the College in the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana-a partnership between the State and Central Government - has led to a much needed enhancement in terms of infrastructure and equipment which has led to better patient care, teaching and research outcomes. Besides offering a 4 1/2 year MBBS course the college also offers MD and MS courses.

The MD courses offered by the college inclue: internal medicine,Pathology, Pediatrics, microbiology,Community Medicine,Pharmacology, Radio Diagnosis,Psychiatry, Tuberculosis and chest Diseases, Anesthesiology, Forensic Medicine, Physiology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

Its MS list offers the following courses for study: General Surgery, Orthopedics, Anatomy, Otorhinolaryngology and Ophthalmology
