New Medical Colleges, more PG seats in Maharashtra next year

The process of setting up new medical colleges across the state for the academic session 2018-19 has been initiated by the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) .


Proposals for opening new colleges, introducing PG courses, and increasing intake capacity of UG and PG courses in Health Sciences have been called for from both new trusts and existing colleges . This is considered an important step taken by MUHSin the direction of implementing the ambitious 5 year plan of the university.


"The University has officially invited applications from interested trusts and colleges. Detailed academic notification regarding information, affiliation fees, and the proposal format will be shared on the varsity's website by May 25," announced the Registrar , MUHS.


The MUHS’s five year plan released last year, clearly spoke of the need for more medical colleges in State.


"Currently, the region-wise student intake capacity per one lakh population for Konkan (Mumbai) region is 2.83, for Pune region is 3.18, for Nagpur region is 4.68, for Marathwada (Aurangabad) region is 2.67, for Amravati region is 2.66 and for Nashik (North Maharashtra) region is 0.54. To increase this ratio, medical colleges will be started," states a report. The report also shares interesting facts and the current medical education scenario in the state of Maharashtra adds TOI.


Presently 13 districts in the state have no medical colleges, 16 are deprived of dental colleges and there are also no ayurvedic and unani colleges in 7 and 30 districts respectively of the state. Furthermore 3 districts have no nursing institutes, physiotherapy colleges are absent in 20. Besides these, there is extreme paucity of occupational therapy colleges, and none exist for BASLP(Bachelor of Audiology Speech Language Pathology).
