New medical college to come up in Karur Tamil Nadu: 150 MBBS Seats to be added

Chennai: The MBBS aspirants of Tamil Nadu state are probably going to have an additional of 150 MBBS seats as a new medical college is going to be established at a district headquarters hospital.

The officials informed that the centre has granted its permission for setting up a new government medical college and hospital at Karur and commence MBBS course for 150 seats at the Institute for the academic year 2019-20.

Initially, the medical college will run from a 340-bed district headquarters hospital as a teaching facility. Adding to that, the Dean, Karur Medical College, Dr Rosy Vennila informed that a 1,000-bed unitary campus on the 20-acre land is currently being built and by the third year, students will use 800 of these beds for learning.

TOI reports that the Medical Council of India (MCI) had conducted two rounds of inspections at the medical institute campus and it has asked the government for an undertaking for rectification of minor deficiencies in a couple of months.

Last year, the state had 2900 MBBS seats at 22 government medical colleges. With Karur medical college and a few other new medical colleges that will get established, the health department authorities are anticipating the MBBS pool going up to 3250 seats this academic year.

The state government had taken a policy decision to get a number of medical colleges or to add additional seats to the existing medical colleges every year.

Earlier, the state used to apply for 100 MBBS seats for new medical colleges and then increased the pool step by step. However, after setting up a medical college in Pudukottai with 150 MBBS seats, the government decided that all new medical colleges should have at least 150 seats, State Health Secretary had earlier informed

The proposals for few colleges are pending while for few medical colleges pressure is on. The Director of Medical Education Dr A Edwin Joe informed the TOI, "All new colleges now have 150 seats. We are trying to increase the number of MBBS seats to 250 in all existing medical colleges."

In addition to its plan to establish new medical colleges with 150 MBBS seats, the state is also planning to increase the current MBBS pool at each government medical college to 250 seats. 250 is the maximum number of MBBS seats that the MCI has allowed any medical institute to have.

Meanwhile, at least four private medical colleges had applied for licences. The state had issued no-objection certificates to two self-financing medical colleges including the Kovai Medical Centre in Coimbatore, adds TOI.
