New Delhi: Premier PG Medical Institution in the capital- GB Pant Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, has been denied permission to start MD (Radiodiagnosis) as well as MD(Pathology) courses after the medical council noted a number of shortcomings at the institute to start the said courses

Most Prominently, the PG Committee of the Medical Council of India noted that this is a super-speciality institution running super speciality courses in Cardiology, Neurology & Gastroenterology and there surgical counterparts. There are no other departments like Orthopaedics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology etc. The PGs will have no training in radiology/pathology of other subjects which are not available in this institution.

Moreover, the MCI PG committee noted that Council Assessor’s Report (16/07/2018) which pointed out to many infrastructural and manpower deficiencies at the institute. For the purposes of PG Radiology, the institute did not have a mammography and DSA, while MRI was non-functional on the day of assessment.

The council noted many faculty deficiencies for starting PG pathology course and noted that Pathological post-mortems are not performed at the Institute.

Another deficiency pointed out by the council related to the stipend for resident doctors "The column “Stipend paid by State Govt. to Residents” is left blank which is not feasible. The column “Stipend paid by Institute to Residents” also is left blank implying there is no commitment to pays tipend to Residents This needs to be clarified," the committee added.

With the above deficiencies, and others that were pointed out in the assessor's report, the PG committee of the MCI decided to recommend to the Central Government not to grant letter of permission for starting of MD(Pathology) and MD (Radiodiagnosis) course at G.B. Pant Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, New Delhi under University of Delhi, New Delhi u/s 10A of the IMC Act, 1956 for the academic year 2019-20.
