Nishita Purohit, Tops AIIMS Entrance Test

New Delhi: The Thursday declaration of the MBBS Entrance Examination to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS), had Nishita Purohit, an 18 year old basketball player emerge as the topper in the neck to neck race for the year 2017. Wanting to study cardiology or Radiology, she is a 91.4 per center in her CBSE board.


The nine others who have been included in the toppers category are : Archit Gupta with AIR 2 from the Allen Career Institute in Kota,Tamoghna Ghosh(Distance) Nipum Chandra, Harsh Agarwal, Rishav Raj, Harshit Anand, Rinku Sarmah (Distance), Abhishek Dogra and Manish Moolchandani with AIR 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, respectively.


Humble about her achievement, the 18 year old when asked whether she was expecting to top the list said, "I was not sure about the topper's rank in AIIMS but was certain about being selected ." Giving credit to her coaching institute her parents and family she said, "While my coaching institute guided me to success, my mother regularly visited me during my stay in Kota and both she and my brother, Anshul, motivated me to do my best," she told HT. Coming from a Science family, Nishita's father Nirmal Indu, an IIT alumnus, is the president of a private firm in Odisha ; her brother also an IIT Bombay alumnus, works in the US and her mother Himanshu a homemaker, is a pharmacy graduate.


Her preparation strategy was simple, with classroom learning being the most significant; followed by regular doing of homework and revision. She "attended around six hours of coaching classes daily and later used to self-study for six hours." Having played basket ball in school and at the national level she left the game for a medical career. She however, plans to continue playing . Multi faceted, she also likes to play shotput and discus throw and enjoys singing.


Date for results of the other medical examination, National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) 2017, are also likely to be announced soon.


AIIMS MBBS 2017 Entrance Examination held on 28th May 2017, for 700 seats of AIIMS, New Delhi and six other AIIMS at Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur & Rishikesh (100 seats each) was declared on 14th June, 2017.

The entire examination was held as a computer based test (online) mode. The examination was conducted in a total of 537 centers, 167 cities of country spread over 29 States and 3 Union Territories of India from Srinagar to Kanyakumari and from Port Blair and Imphal to Gandhinagar. The examination was held for the first time in Leh and Port Blair. The Entrance Examination was conducted in two languages (Hindi and English) and candidates had the option of viewing questions in either language. Out of a total of 3,64,242 eligible candidates, 2,84,737 candidates appeared in the examination. Female candidates outnumbered male candidates (1,50,793 female, 1,33,933 male and 11 third gender candidates).

A total of 4905 candidates have qualified in this examination (1828 female and 2077 male candidates) and are eligible for counselling session for admission in AIIMS. However, in the first round of counselling only 4 times the number of the seats available in each category will be called. More candidates may be called for subsequent rounds of counselling depending upon the availability of the seats. The detailed schedule of counselling sessions will be regularly published in the website www.aiimsexams.org.
