NEET spelt COMPULSORY by the UGC to all deemed universities
Bangalore: A September 15 notification of the University Grants Commission has clearly spelt out admission to all deemed medical universities compulsory through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, NEET.
UGC has stated that that all institutions that are deemed-to-be universities are governed by the UGC Regulations, 2016. Quoting Clause 6.3 of the regulation which mandates how the admission of students to an institution deemed to be a university, public or private, should be made, UGC says appropriate statutory authority for medical colleges/institutes is the Medical Council of India. The MCI clearly mandates that admissions to deemed universities have to be made through NEET.
The notification also makes clear that all deemed to be universities are to be part of common counselling for admission in medical courses organised by Central/State Governments or through its agencies based on marks obtained in NEET.
According to the notification, if common counselling is not being conducted by the state government or deemed universities of the state, the institutes should ensure that they put up a transparent system of admission, giving all students the opportunity to apply for admission.
The notification also promotes admission to be done on inter se merit, amongst the applicants based on NEET rankings.
Admissions to MBBS/BDS courses are to be subject to these stipulations and asked for compliance with regards to the same, after closure of admissions as per norms, it adds.
UGC has instructed that the admissions of MBBS/BDS courses are subject to these stipulations. It has also directed the institutes to submit the compliance in respect of the same after the admissions are closed as per norms.
