NEET effect: Special classes for students who will miss MBBS syllabus in August in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu: After the NEET results are delayed, DME is planning to conduct special classes for students who will miss MBBS syllabus beginning in first week of August in Tamil Nadu.
The capital city, Chennai reported close to 14,500 aspirants appearing for the second phase of NEET, across 31 centres. Chennai is the only city where NEET was held for the state medical aspirants. This figure is however less in comparison to 25,000 students who appeared for phase one of NEET from this state itself.
Tamil Nadu is already over with the first stage of medical counseling, which was closed on June 25. 2,383 MBBS seats in 20 GMCs have been filled up. Besides, two ESIC hospitals in Chennai and Coimbatore each also got filled. 7 BDS seats in government dental college are still to be filled up.
DME has announced its plans to hold special classes for students who will join MBBS classes after the 2nd phase of medical counseling. The MBBS classes will begin in the first week of August. The 2nd phase of counseling is delayed with the counseling for NEET-2.
Speaking to Express, a senior official said classes for MBBS would begin in the first week of August, but the date of second phase of medical counselling was yet to be announced as DME was awaiting NEET-II exam results, which were expected on August 17.
"Since most of the students who get to MBBS during the second phase of medical counselling will miss the syllabus, we will conduct special classes for the second set," the official added.
The 2nd stage of counseling is often held by mid-July every year in the state. This year is an exception as medical admissions to 15 per cent All India Quota seats will be done through NEET. With the NEET results delayed, the state admission schedule also got upset.
Officials at DME further implied that since 8 students did not appear for medical admission, these 8 seats in GMCs will be included in the 2nd phase of counseling.
There are 72 MBBS seats in self-financed medical colleges and 970 BDS seats in self financed dental colleges still waiting for admissions. Aspirants seeking medical admissions under management quota in private medical colleges were required to appear for NEET.
