Nagpur: Retired GMC Professor files PIL for better facilities
Maharashtra: Dr Krishna Kamble, a retired professor from GMC's (Nagpur) Radiotherapy Department with over 37 years of experience in serving cancer patients is now a social worker. He is reported to have filed a PIL in the Bombay High Court demanding better facilities at the government-run cancer hospital in the city.
The reason cited by him for moving the court is plain: in his view the city has the highest number of cancer-stricken patients in the whole of Maharashtra.
The demands made through his plea stress on having more facilities at GMC; facilities like equipment and resident doctors for MD Radiotherapy course in Government Medical College (GMC) here. GMC Nagpur is the only colleges of all 16 GMC’s in Maharashtra that offers this course, however, it is not recognised by MCI as the deficiencies pointed by it has not been rectified till now by the government.
Dr Kamble has in addition implied that the MD Radiotherapy course was started in 2011, but has since been facing issues like lack of senior resident doctors and equipment. Since it is not recognised, there are four students who have completed the course who are suffering the maximum, as they are denied internship opportunities and jobs. Even Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) does not recognise this course as an additional qualification. Following which, there have been several representations made by the students to the chief minister, but in vain.
As reported by TOI, The Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court on Thursday issued notices to MCI along with additional chief secretary of State Department of Medical Education and Drugs, Director of Medical Education and Research (DMER), and GMC Nagpur dean. A division bench comprising justice Bhushan Gavai and justice Atul Chandurkar directed all respondents to file a reply within three weeks.
