Nagpur: The Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC) inaugurated three eye and three ENT operation theaters recently.

Dr. PG Dixit, the College's Acting Dean, inaugurated the OTs of the two Departments. "I am delighted to see the minute details of each OT. The heads of the department and other staff need appreciation for putting such hard work in planning the structures. These will suffice us for many decades to come," said Dr Dixit.

Head, Ophthalmology, Dr. NG Raut who was present on the occasion said that it was encouraging to see the OTs in place finally, despite the fact that the 5 missing table in the eye OT didn't make it completely functional. He also brought to light the existent shortcomings, by mentioning shortage of manpower in the nursing wing, as well as, the less in number, class three and IV employees section.

"The Joint Director of Medical Education and Research, Dr Prakash Wakode has assured that he will ensure that the tables are purchased and installed at the earliest,"Dr. Raut added.

The Medical Council of India norms are being met with by the new OTs, as they have all the associated facilities like surgeons, rooms, nurses and staff rooms, changing rooms, drugstore, linen rooms etc.

Of the three Eye OTs established, two come under the 'Clean' category OTs and one is classified as the "Infected OT." The category classification implies that infection ridden eyes will be operated in the Infection OT, while the other operations would be conducted in the Clean OTs.

Acting Head, ENT Department, Dr Vipin Ekhar said that the introduction of the new OTs would reduce waiting lists of patients looking for various ear, nose, throat-related surgeries and cancers of these areas. "It will now be possible for us to start cochlear implant surgeries also soon. The Department- Head, Dr Jeevan Reddy is undergoing training for cochlear implants at Mumbai and once he returns, the project will start," Dr. Ekhar told TOI.

The new eye OTs will speed up procedures like corneal transplants or keratoplasties. The other routinely done surgeries include glaucoma, cataract, squint and retinal operations like surgery retinal detachments, vitreo-retinal operations and posterior segment surgery.
