Nagpur: GMC gets MCI nod to start MCh in Paediatric Surgery with 2 seats
Nagpur: To train doctors in conducting high-risk surgeries on newborns and children Medical Council of India (MCI) has given its nod to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) to start speciality course in neonatal and paediatric surgery from the year 2019-20.
The MCh (paediatric surgery) is a three-year course for which the admission process will expectedly start from the August this year.
The GMC Nagpur is the Premiere Institute of Central India. The College was established in 1947 Ad and was inaugurated by the President Dr Rajendra Prasad. The Campus stretched over an area of 196 acres of land.
The Hospital attached to the institution accounted for 1401 bed with updated facilities. Beside Medical College and Hospital and Superspeciality Hospital, the campus incorporates Dental College, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, and Nursing Schools.

According to a media report, every day around 300 child patient come daily.
Dr Nilesh Nagdeve, associate professor at the paediatric department, told the TOI, "About 30-40% of these patients require surgical inputs. Presently, they are being looked after by doctors in the general surgery wing. After this course, we will get dedicated staff and specialized doctors to treat children. Many surgeries for which people have to travel up to Mumbai, will be performed in Nagpur itself."
"Candidates have a bright option of teaching in their speciality of education both at government and private institutes. Paediatric surgeons provide surgical care for all problems or conditions affecting children that require surgical intervention," he further added.
Earlier the institute was sanctioned for MCh in plastic surgery.
The Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the Radiotherapy department with the approval for upgradation of the radiotherapy department in the medical college was allocated Rs 76.10 crore for the first phase of construction. The Maharashtra Government had issued a Government Resolution (GR) where it mentioned that the government will allocate the said amount for construction of the department.
