Bhopal: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), will be holding fresh interviews for the post of Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS) Bhopal. Its announcement sets to rest all speculation of a local faculty member of the premier institute being handed over reins of the institute.

The Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) released a fresh advertisement for post of Director AIIMS Bhopal, earlier this month.

The state’s two major government hospitals are also poised for new Director Appointments. According to sources, the Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Center (BMHRC) is in all likelihood to have Dr. Rajesh Malik as its new Director, reports TOI

It is believed that earlier in the year the Madhya Pradesh Government had formally requested the Union Government for handover of the super specialty hospital for the victims of the Bhopal gas disaster of 1984.

Sources said some in the BMHRC hierarchy are supportive of the state government move. There are high possibilities of a society being formed to look after the day to today functioning of the BMHRC, once transferred to the state government’s charge. This is to be quite similar to the functioning of the Bhopal Memorial Hospital Trust (BMHT). The healthcare hub was under the charge of the BMHT till 2010.

Interviews were held earlier as well for directorial appointments for AIIMS Bhopal and Bhubaneshwar, two of the six new AIIMS in the pipeline. The health ministry succeeded in appointing a Director for Bhubaneshwar, However, at AIIMS Bhopal , appointment had yet to get through leaving the institution headless for more than a year. Dr. Nitin Nagarkar, Director, AIIMS Raipur, might be given a chance by the MOHFW to join AIIMS Bhubaneshwar, as his term at Raipur ends in 2017, stated sources.

AIIMS Bhopal has made leaps and is likely to have a 24x7 service by the end of this year. Depending on capacity, AIIMS Bhopal and BMHRC could have an additional 50 MD seats coming their way. This would give tremendous boost to health facilities in the state. BMHRC is to have 350 beds, while AIIMS Bhopal is expected to have 960 beds.
