MOHFW directs AIIMS, JIPMER not to conduct MBBS entrance exams from 2020
New Delhi: Taking cue from the Union Health minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan's announcement, that NEET will be the common entry point to all MBBS admissions pan india including those in AIIMS,JIPMER and PGIMER, the Health Ministry has now issued a direction for the same.
Directing the medical Institutes of National Importance (INIs), the letter written by Undersecretary Sunita Dhaundiyal, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare directed that there will be no separate UG medical exams from 2020 at these institutes
" Keeping in view, the provisions of National Medical Commission Act, 2019, it has been decided that all Institutes of National Importance (INIs) would not conduct any UG entrance exam 2020 onwards, " the letter directed.
The letter was particularly written to three Institutes including AIIMS Delhi, JIPMER Puducherry, and PGIMER Chandigarh, but the direction will be valid for all medical INIs offering UG medical courses including all AIIMS. AIIMS, New Delhi has been the exam conducting body for MBBS entrance for all AIIMS across the country
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that till now MBBS admissions via NEET and common counselling conducted by NTA and Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) respectively, are done at all the medical colleges except those institutes who have been accorded national importance status including All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry (JIPMER).
However, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan recently announced that National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) will be the one and only gateway to MBBS admission across the country including AIIMS and JIPMER from the next academic year
"This will help set common standards in medical education sector in the country," Dr Vardhan declared.
These major changes in the medical education system are the features of the newly cleared National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill, 2019 which is going to replace the Medical Council of India (MCI).
The National Medical Commission Act, 2019 provides for common national entrance test – NEET – along with common counselling for MBBS, and a common final year MBBS exam which will be applicable to all institutes including those of national importance like AIIMS.
