MBBS student missing after failing VIVA: Medicos take to street demanding action

Vadodara: The missing Devkishan Katadiya (Ahir) a final-year MBBS student, GMERS Medical College, Gotri seems to have left behind a torment of unrest with people at the medical college. Katadiya went missing on March 10, leaving behind a note stating that injustice had been done to him by his teachers, who had marked him poorly during VIVA, despite an overall good performance by him. He also regretted his step of going away in the face of injustice as it was bound to sadden his family.


The happening came to light when Devkishan Katadiya did not return home on Saturday at Kamrej near Surat. Katadiya’s parents had on Friday told him to come home after he was declared as having failed in his viva. When the medical student did not follow parental instruction and reach home, his father called him on his mobile on Saturday, only to receive no response. After successive calls, the parents got in touch with the hostel warden and requested him to check his room.


Katadiya’s phone, wallet, identity cards and a two-page letter addressed to his family members were recovered by the warden when a search was conducted.


Two days after he went missing, Katadiya’s mark sheet, which is available with the TOI revealed that the boy had cleared his viva exam, and had failed his practical exams of surgery and obstetrics and gynaecology subjects. The failed subjects were evaluated by an external faculty.


With so many days passed since the medico went missing, the police have now intensified the search, while the medical college students have taken to streets. It is reported that students of 5 medical colleges took our a mega rally demanding that authorities intensify their search


From Streets, they marched from district collectorate to police commissionerate to finally M S University head office, holding placards with messages like ‘We are with you’, ‘Please come back’, . They were accompanied by relatives of Katadiya including the final year student’s father, who turned emotional while urging the authorities to fast-track the search for his son reports TOI.
