MIMER to commence operations with 3 courses

Aizwal: A Rs. 126.72 crores worth first medical college in Mizoram- the Mizoram Institute of Medical Education and Research (MIMER) is soon going to become functional. Three departments namely anatomy, biochemistry and physiology will be functional at the time of admission commencement. This announcement was made official on Monday.

The medical college is slated for an August opening, according to the College Director, Dr L. Fimate.

The medical institution is to be established in the state referral hospital at Falkawn village, 16 km east of Aizawl.

The Director assured that all necessary infrastructure as per Medical Council of India norms is available in this case. "The MCI has approved a letter of permission which is expected to be received from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare within this month and classes will commence from August," he added.

According to the Director, the college will commence operations with a seat strength of a 100, of which 15 percent will be reserved for the general category and 10 percent for non-resident Indians. The rest 75 percent will be open to the local students, reported the Telegraph.

Earlier, Mizoram Chief Minister, Lal Thanhawla had defined the move to set up this college as a milestone in the history of Mizoram.

Rs 50 crore annually, has been earmarked by the state government as maintenance expense for the medical college.

Health Minister, Lal Thanzara had earlier revealed to the Assembly that there are 629 sanctioned posts for the Medical Education and Research Institute of which 52 have been filled up.

According to the letter of permission norms, the state government was granted permission to recruit 409 employees. The break up is as follows- 104 faculty, 33 administrative employees, 44 technical staff, 54 ancillary staff and 174 nursing staff for the establishment of the medical college.

Rs 24.7 crore has been received by the state government out of the total sanctioned Rs. 126.72 crores.
