Merit seats on the increase in minority colleges in Telangana
Telangana: The merit quota’ seat matrix in minority medical colleges from the next academic year (2018-19) will be changed by the Telangana Government resulting in the meritorious getting additional BDS and MBBS seats.
The decision has been taken due to the recent High Court directions and is in accordance with the merit quota in minority colleges. Till last year the merit quota in these colleges was 60%.This year on the requests forwarded by minority college managements, the percentage was reduced to 50.However, suffering from the setback, students and parents have protested against this decision.
The High Court received many petitions challenging the reduction in merit quota by the government.The High Court was found favouring the petitioners. This ended in the seat matrix being restored to the 60:40 matrix, of which 60 comprises of the merit quota; 25% management quota and the remaining 15% going the NRI way reports Deccan Chronicle.
The minority colleges merit quota will rise from 250 to 300. An additional 200 MBBS seats in the government’s merit quota will be increased; along with an approval for the setting up of an additional government college in Siddipet.
The state has an intake of 500 seats in its 3 medical and one dental colleges. The merit quota in these colleges is meant to increase by another 50.(From 250 to 300).
