The Medical Council of India (MCI) in a letter to the Dean of North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Science’s(NEIGRIHMS) has refused to recognize MD/MS (Anesthesiology) qualification for two seats . The de recognition comes in the face of the staff crunch faced by the university.

The letter further informed that the “ Post graduate medical examination committee of the council at its last meeting held last month considered the council’s assessor report of April 2017 on the standard of examination and other teaching facilities for renewal of recognition of MD/MS (Anesthesiology ) Qualification for 2 seats in the institute.”

The letter further stated on consideration of the report the committee had decided to not recommend recognition of courses granted by NEHU with regards to students being trained at the institute due to the staff shortage at the university. Other reasons cited by the MCI were “Promotion of Associate Professor, Nari Maru Lyngdoh is not as per regulation. She was assistant professor for 4 years and six months against the requirement of 5 years.”

The Council also pointed out that in 2012, 2014, and 2015, the college despite having a letter of permission for 2 students had gone ahead and admitted four. The total number of major operations for the whole hospital on assessment day was only 10, average of randomly selected days is only 9, which is inadequate reports NE today.
