Meerut :The first MRI machine for Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College (LLRM), Meerut, was installed at the Radio Diagnostic Centre by Cabinet Minister Shahid Manzoor. Mr. Manzoor also happened to be the first patient to undergo an MRI scan.

The advantage of the MRI machine at LLRM is that diagnostic tests will be cheaper now, in comparison to other hospitals. MRI scans at private hospitals cost around Rs. 6000, however , at LLRM this facility can be availed for a mere Rs2,500 or Rs 3000 only. "This is a positive move for city residents as MRI facility is available at LLRM on nearly half the price compared to private hospitals," Manzoor told

"It is a 1.5 Tesla MRI machine purchased for Rs 8.5 crore. Though the tender of the machine was passed over two years ago, the machine has been purchased now," adds, Dr KK Gupta, principal, LLRM Medical College

Dr Yasmeen Usmani, Head, Department of Radio-Diagnosis, says that the LLRM would in another two months be starting a CT scan facility as well; with an MRI, X-Ray and ultrasound already being in place, he proudly claims.

As per government norms, MRIs will be done free of cost for the below poverty line (BPL) card holders, freedom fighters, ex-MLAs and destitutes.
