In an effort to provide better health services to the city and optimize facility usage, Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis on Monday asked the Health Department officials to raise the number of faculty appointments in Government Medical Colleges.

The Chief Minister asked the health officials to ensure that hospital beds were in proportion to the number of teachers employed by Government Medical Colleges. He has asked the Department to furnish a report on the progress made on the said front within a span of three months. The report is meant to furnish the hospital/ teacher/ student proportion, in clear terms, in hospitals attached to Government Medical Colleges.

Girish Mahajan, Medical Education Minister revealed that the number of beds available in government hospitals were way beyond that stipulated by the Medical Council Of India. Mr. Mahajan will be following up on the Chief Minister’s directive to employ faculty in accordance with hospital beds.

As per government hospital norms, 200 students are to be attached to a 1000 bed strength in hospitals.

However GMC Nagpur has 200 students to 1,401 beds; Aurangabad GMC has 1,177 beds instead of the assigned 750 as per student strength, and BJ Medical College, Pune has 200 students for the government run Sassoon Hospital housing 1,296 beds reports DNA.
